INFRAHUB IN THE CLASSROOM

The infrahub.africa database of infrastructure innovations are making their way into the classrooms and assignments of South African Universities. Students interested in sustainable and just urban transitions are now able to learn and be inspired directly by communities and innovators that are plugging infrastructure and service delivery gaps across the continent in new and suprising ways.

Just and Sustainable Urbanisms Module - Stellenbosch University

At Stellenbosch University, the Centre for Sustainability Transitions’ Just and Sustainable Urbanisms module (PGDip in Sustainable Development) integrated the infrahub.africa case studies into its programme on urban innovation in 2024 and 2025.

Dr Chrispo Dingha presenting several infrahub.africa case studies to students of the Just and Sustainable Urbanisms module hosted at RLabs in August 2025.

The team has consistently found that the case studies are a grounded entry-point for the predominantly South African class to engage with contexts across the African continent through guest lectures, group work assessments, and panel discussions.

Students are invited to stay connected to the work by proposing case studies that fit infrahub’s criteria, and joining the cohort of infrahub.africa researchers.

Adaptive Smart Cities Module - University of Cape Town

The African Centre for Cities at the University of Cape Town is also exploring integrating infrahub.africa into its courses. In September, infrahub.africa Researcher Martin Magidi delivered a guest lecture for the MSUP (Masters in Sustainable Urban Practice) during their module titled "Adaptive Smart Cities."

Martin highlighted these cases and students were asked to conduct their own research to find other African examples.

“Students demonstrated substantial interest in the infrahub approach to sustainable infrastructure, particularly its innovative integration of technology, community engagement, and environmental considerations.”

A few students indicated they were considering applying the infrahub framework to their own research and practice in their analysis of infrastructure projects, beyond the Adaptive Smart Cities module.
