It was a privilege to celebrate four years of academic collaboration with the Urban Futures Studio and Centre for Sustainability Transitions, and to share some of the impacts of the African Urban Futures Project with a broader audience.💡
Event Highlights
We were honored to be joined by leaders from local government, civil society, and the academic community to share some of the challenges and opportunities of experimenting with more just and sustainable alternatives in South African cities, spearheaded by:
Alderman Eddie Andrews (Deputy Mayor, City of Cape Town)
Bushra Razack (Former CEO, Philippi Village)
Maarten A. Hajer (Director, Urban Futures Studio at Utrecht University)
Edgar Pieterse (Director, African Centre for Cities at UCT) – Program Director & Convener
The conversation was hosted amidst a poster exhibition of 16 of the African infrastructure innovations on our infrahub.africa website, ranging from rentable solar-charged power banks in Nigeria to overhead water distribution pipes in Kenya. The collection now features 70 infrastructure initiatives from across the continent that demonstrate how basic services can be delivered in ways that are both just and sustainable.
Our heartfelt thanks go to the various suppliers who assisted us in delivering this event, and to the Dutch Ministry of Infrastructure and Water Management for their generous support of the African Urban Futures project.
