Background

Trashcoin emerged from the collaborative efforts of its founders Nnodim Eliot Wogu, Ajirioghene Amadi, Damilola Daramola and Phebe Olamide Ilesanmi, who collectively identified the intersecting challenges of environmental degradation and economic marginalisation in African urban areas. Drawing inspiration from Germany’s well-established plastic deposit refund system, the team developed a digital platform aimed at transforming waste into financial assets. By enabling users to exchange recyclables for digital tokens, Trashcoin not only incentivises responsible waste disposal but also enhances recycling transparency and operational efficiency within fragmented urban waste economies. The initiative is particularly responsive to the structural inefficiencies that characterise informal waste collection systems across many African cities. Residents frequently express frustration at the sluggish response times and high service charges demanded by small-scale waste collectors, revealing a critical service gap that Trashcoin seeks to fill. Furthermore, the platform is pertinent in urban contexts marked by a high reliance on bottled water due to inadequate public water infrastructure, which contributes significantly to plastic waste.

Approach

Trashcoin simplifies recycling through a user-friendly mobile app that directly connects users with nearby waste collection centres, making waste disposal easier. Unlike traditional waste management systems typically characterised by inefficient municipal services, limited incentives for households, and minimal integration of informal waste actors, Trashcoin immediately rewards users with digital credits that can be redeemed for cash or essential services such as mobile data, electricity and educational fees. This incentive-driven model boosts participation in recycling, creates jobs and supports local economies by turning waste into tangible benefits. Additionally, users can register as waste collectors for approximately $25, enabling low-income individuals to aggregate waste and sell it to recycling companies for profit. The platform also features an "Uber for waste" system, allowing users to request waste collection for a fee.

Social Impact

Trashcoin's platform directly benefits underserved communities by turning everyday waste into a source of financial empowerment. Users exchange recyclable wastes for digital credits that can be withdrawn for cash or essential services, providing a steady income alternative for those with limited financial means. By enabling individuals with minimal start-up capital to get started as collectors or aggregators, the initiative fosters local employment and entrepreneurial opportunities while contributing to broader environmental sustainability efforts, creating a win-win for both people and the planet.

Environmental Impact

Trashcoin’s digital platform significantly reduces environmental pollution by encouraging proper waste disposal, which allows for sorting and processing of recyclable wastes. This reduces the amount of non-biodegradable materials like plastics littering public spaces, clogging watercourses and polluting oceans. Unlike conventional systems, which often face high contamination rates and inefficient logistics, Trashcoin’s user-driven, decentralised model encourages higher recovery rates and minimises the environmental impacts associated with unregulated waste burning and poor waste infrastructure.

Success Factors

Key factors in Trashcoin’s success include strong leadership and management, strategic partnerships and financial backing through grants and incubator programmes that have provided critical mentorship, funding and networking opportunities. Additionally, its seamless digital platform has resonated with communities.

Evidence

Evidence of Trashcoin’s positive impact is reflected in its processing over 5,480 tonnes of recyclable waste, hosting more than 12,000 active users on the app, and supporting 703 collection centres. The initiative has facilitated the creation of digital savings wallets serving over 3 million marginalised individuals (predominantly women). The initiative’s contribution to poverty alleviation and environmental sustainability highlights its transformation efforts.

Evolution

Trashcoin’s approach has evolved from initially focusing solely on plastic waste to encompassing a broader spectrum of recyclable materials, such as aluminium, paper, electronic waste, and more. This shift has been driven by practical insights and user feedback, revealing the need for a more comprehensive recycling system that can better address environmental challenges and expand economic opportunities for marginalised communities. Concurrently, the platform has refined its digital incentive mechanisms and operational processes to enhance transparency and efficiency in waste management.

Challenges

One of the principal challenges facing Trashcoin is securing sustained funding and overcoming infrastructural limitations, as waste collection is often perceived as a high-risk investment in developing regions. Additionally, systemic issues such as policy uncertainties and low public awareness about sustainable waste management further hinder efforts to scale the initiative effectively.
